New Sports Complex Dedicated at Orchard
Lake
"Lord God, we come together to ask your blessing upon
this sports arena and banquet hall which will be the site
for numerous gatherings and events, and athletic competitions.
Bless all those who have, and who will continue to support
the Orchard Lake Schools and this endeavor. Bless the administration,
faculty and students, and alumni, that they may be faithful
to the Gospel mission for which these schools were founded
over 100 years ago. Send forth your powerful Holy Spirit,
so that this place may be filled with the light and peace
of the Spirit of God, and so that all that is done here may
bring you greater honor and glory, now and forever."
These words of dedication were read by Auxiliary Bishop Francis
Reiss as the new athletic complex, including hockey arena
and banquet center, were officially opened at Orchard Lake,
as part of the Orchard Lake Schools campus.
The grand opening took place on Sunday, November 16, 2003
starting at 3 p.m. It brought together hundreds of visitors,
current students and faculty members of the Orchard Lake Schools.
The new complex includes a state-of-the-art hockey arena with
large spectators area, great lighting, professional radio
system, and numerous amenities such as concessions, pro-shop
and skate rental.
The grand opening ceremony began with Rev. Timothy Whalen,
Chancellor of the Orchard Lake Schools, introducing some of
the key figures of Orchard Lake Schools as well as some very
special guests.
The dedication ceremony was conducted by Bishop Reiss. Sunday
was also the day of the first game on the newly opened hockey
arena. St. Mary's Preparatory All Stars team faced the Detroit
Red Wings Alumni. Among the Red Wings were names such as Craig
Wolanin, Dennis Hextall, John Ogrodnick, Ray Markham, Brent
Fedyk, Paul McKinnon, Todd Bidner, Nick Libett and others.
The first puck was thrown by Msgr. Stanley E. Milewski, Chancellor
Emeritus of Orchard Lake. Referees during this inaugural game
were Matt Pavelich, NHL official, and John Rea. St. Mary's
Preparatory All Stars team lost this match 6 to 12, but nobody
seemed to mind. This was a great fun-filled event during which
everyone celebrated.
After less than one full year of construction work, the 3.6
million dollar project was finished and ready to serve many
generations of Orchard Lake students and the community. The
new sports complex does not have an official name yet. It
is likely that the sponsor who made the greatest donation
will be honored by having the complex named after them.
After the game a special banquet was prepared on the upper
level of the arena,
where a modern banquet center is located.
