STATUE OF OUR LADY OF ORCHARD LAKE

Designed by Joseph Jankowski, of Cleveland, an artist and alumnus, and executed by sculptor Clarence Van Duzer. Both were members of the faculty at Cleveland Institute of Arts

The body of the statue is comprised of three gigantic sections. The crown and hands were executed separately. It took Van Duzer 11 months to complete. The statue was transported on flat bed truck to Orchard Lake, assembled, and put into place on Dec. 5, 1962.

The head of the Madonna is 4 feet high, the eyes four inches across. The statue is 25 feet high and 8 feet in diameter, held together by inner copper tubing which forms framework. About 10,000 pieces of cut, hand-formed copper plate brazed into place to form the statue. It is suspended on the facade of the Shrine Chapel by 3/8-inch stainless steel cable.
